Andre Walker is an African American Major League Baseball player — the best in the game. He plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has fans worshipping him and his aggressive style of play. He is arrogant, short-tempered, and loves his money. Rumors swirl that he's been using steroids to enhance his game.
Facing a contract decision, a brother's kidney disease, and a wife and son who have left him — Andre takes the field to escape his problems. He gets hit in the head with a baseball and is knocked out cold.
When Andre awakes, he's on deck about to hit. He looks around and notices he is the only Black player on the field. The year is 1945 and Andre is in Birmingham, Alabama, playing for the Birmingham Barons on an all-white minor league team.
Guided by batboy Willy, Andre crosses paths with some of the greatest Negro League Baseball players ever to play the game. On this journey he will fall in love with the game again, appreciate the fans, and discover that a brother's love is great to receive — but better to give. In the end, Andre is given a second chance to make things right.
